Yes, there is a real-life Hailey.

Just like the fictional Hailey of Hiss, Whine & Start Over, the real Hailey
was a shelter dog passed over by potential adopters because she was too
big, too furry, too old, and too un-purebred. Always a softie for the
underdog, I adopted her and brought her home during a hailstorm.
